Agency and In-House: The Exception or The Rule
Our recent survey of over 125 communications professionals sought to bring objectivity to an all too often subjective question – in this piece we delved a little more into the numbers.
Hello, I’m Rosie, having recently swapped the beaches of Bournemouth for the city skyline to pursue my career in London, I am Sapio’s newest Researcher.
My route into the role hasn’t exactly been linear, but some paramount experiences and a few big decisions have led me to this point, and I hope that lends itself nicely to supporting others making similar career choices.
After completing my A Levels, I went travelling for 6 months backpacking through Thailand, and Bali and driving a campervan around both of New Zealand’s gorgeous islands. Upon my return, I began studying psychology at The University of Birmingham. I have a fascination for understanding the human brain, particularly communication, and how this can be applied to business. However, upon beginning my course, I found the content was not engaging my interests as anticipated. Not only this, I quickly realised this method of learning was not proactive enough, I felt ambitious and ready to be in the workplace, learning whilst making a tangible impact on a company/individuals. Whilst it was a big decision to leave, I trusted my intuition and passion to develop my skills, this led me to secure a job at a recruitment agency as a Candidate Consultant. I found I had a natural ease for communicating and establishing relationships with candidates and proved to be successful within the recruitment space.
After a solid 10-month grounding in recruitment, I decided it was time to activate something I’d always wanted to do – move to London, a city where I’d spent a lot of my time previously training in the arts as an actress. My early years involved working professionally within the theatre and film industry, being a member of the National Youth Theatre and working on various film sets. Therefore, I knew the arts capital always felt like a home away from home, and I could think of nowhere better for the next stage of my early career.
I was eager to find a company that would support my personal growth and desire to learn. Sapio stuck out to me immediately – the opportunity to learn directly from Richard, Sam and Ali, with their rich knowledge and networks was particularly appealing. Not only this but the close-knit atmosphere between the team felt incredibly supportive and nurturing – a great place to learn and grow quickly.
Within the first two weeks I have been thrown into the fascinating world of PR and comms recruitment, with incredible guidance from Richard, Sam and Ali. With a lot to learn and eager to do so, their expertise and ability to impart has been incredible and I already feel I have a good grasp of the industry. Given my natural inclination to be creative and a personal interest in Marketing, exposure to the world of Comms and Marketing was a really strong driving force as to why I wanted to join Sapio. It’s a fascinating space and I’m really enjoying the opportunity to get under the skin when talking to candidates and clients.
It’s been a great start to my time at Sapio – I’ve felt immediately welcomed and absorbed into the team, being treated to welcome drinks and lunches, invited to Summer parties and events as well as along to meetings with both candidates and clients. We’ve bonded over my enthusiasm for being new to the city, raring to explore and experience as much as possible and, luckily, the team has plenty of intel on the must-hit spots in the city, most recently we had our (slightly soggy) summer party which involved an intense race at the F1 Arcade followed by a bucket list dinner at Bancone in Borough Market.
I’m a very determined person driven by goal setting and targets, which has led to a love of fitness and long-distance running. I have found London is a great place to train for my second half marathon, and am trying to persuade the team to sign up to do one together next year!
I am delighted to be at Sapio for this journey and am very excited to see what the future holds for both myself and for the business.
